Dunes Hotel, Santa Maria, Sal

Sal back from the beach.

This Sal hotel looks like a prison from outside, and is built in an U shape looking in on itself and a small swimming pool. It is new and well-finished but entirely lacking in charm. The position in Sal is not good. It is behind a junk yard in Santa Maria down wind of the sewage works. It is along a bad road from Santa Maria, at the wrong end of Sal. Prices from £259 per person for a week.

P from Kent got there by mistake.

"We were changed from the Belorizonte Hotel,on Sal. On arrival we were not really impressed as everywhere around Santa Maria there was building work being carried out. On the drive through Sal towards the hotel from the outside rather resembled that of a prison. It is situated on Sal a road back from the beach out on the edge of Santa Maria and this road is very uneven due to the building work along it. At night it is very dark and you do need a torch. So it was best to walk onto the beach and then along the prom into Santa Maria . Again, it could be dark as there were not many street lights working in Sal. The hotel was very clean and the chambermaids were always cleaning about the hotel in a very quiet friendly manner. You could not fault them or their work. The breakfast was pleasant and had a selection of cereals, toast, jams, ham and cheese. Coffee, tea and a selection of 4/5 fruit juices, cake, biscuits and melon and tinned fruit, plus either scrambled egg or fried egg on alternate days. The restaurant in the evening was a bit hit or miss, having one day had a good meal and the next not up to scratch. The bar area was the only down point. It is very stark and not very welcoming. There was no entertainment the 2 weeks we were there. The pool area was beautifully kept and although the pool is not heated, once in it was great. Plus the hotel gave you beach towels to use free of charge."
