Lighthouse Hotel on Santa Maria beach

Best all-inclusive in Sal

This is a well estabished but still small all-inclusive Italian hotel. Where the Riu is all German Gestapo, this is Italian Fa Niente. The accommodation consists of bungalows set amongs mature hibiscus and bougainvillea. It is on the Santa Maria beach- unlike the Riu which is half a mile from it -and has a large pool with plenty of sun loungers. Nobody fights for them.

Food is Italian with lots of pasta and pizza served in a buffet. But nobody rushes to get there and you do not have to fight for your food. Drink is free and the Italian plonk at least does not give you a headache like the Spanish plonk at the Riu. Also unlike at the Riu, you have the choice of paying for something better... still Italian but drinkable.

Entertainment and music are organised for all day and range from pool polo and aerobics to volleyball and beach tennis. Much of this is organised in Italan but they will venture into English if needed. There are also tennis courts and a windsurfing station with plenty of equipment.

The pool speakers blare out loud European or American music for most of the day and at night, the night club gets louder still. But it is all in the spirit of Club Med, without perhaps so much forced jollity. The staff both Italian and Cape Verdean are friendly and helpful and speak moderately good English. Prices in the beach bungalows from £308 per person per week.

G from Cheshire found the canned musica acceptable
"Just returned from a two week stay . It was a bit noisy, generated by the animation team. They were enthusiastic and Italian but seemed to be appreciated by the Italian guests and we had no problems with it..."
